Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Coolant Hose Failure: Causes and How to Replace It
A coolant level that keeps dropping with no puddle on the drive is one of the best-known faults on the 1.0 EcoBoost, and it usually comes down to one brittle hose rather than a head gasket or anything more serious. This guide covers the Mk7/Mk7.5 Fiesta, 2012–2016, fitted with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder engine.

Why the degas hose fails
The culprit is the degas hose — the coolant recovery/expansion hose that runs close to the turbocharger and exhaust manifold. On earlier cars, this hose has a rigid plastic mid-section rather than being all-rubber, and that plastic section sits directly in the path of engine bay heat. Over time, repeated heat-cycling makes the plastic brittle, and it eventually cracks — usually at the point where the plastic section joins the rubber ends. Because the leak is often small and the coolant evaporates against a hot engine, there's frequently no visible puddle, just a coolant level that quietly keeps dropping.

- Coolant level warning light or a level that needs regular topping up
- No visible puddle under the car despite the drop
- A sweet smell from the engine bay, especially after a run
- Visible cracking or a white/crusty residue on the plastic section of the degas hose

Reference part numbers
Ford identified this as a genuine design weak point and revised the part during production. The original hose, C1B1-8K276-AE (fitted up to approximately February 2014), has the failure-prone rigid plastic insert. It was superseded by C1B1-8K276-BC (February 2014 onwards), an all-rubber hose with no plastic section to go brittle — a genuine running change rather than just a re-numbered part.

Whichever your car originally had, fitting the later all-rubber C1B1-8K276-BC hose is the sensible choice, since it removes the specific weak point rather than just replacing like-for-like. As always, confirm against your VIN before ordering.
Some owners have reported this fault being covered under goodwill or warranty action at dealers, but no official DVSA recall could be confirmed specific to the Fiesta for this issue — it's much better documented as a recall/service-action item on the Focus Mk3, which shares the same engine and cooling system. If your car is still within a reasonable age/mileage window, it's worth asking a dealer to check your VIN before paying for the part yourself.
Replacing the Degas Hose
Safety warning: only work on a fully cooled engine — the cooling system is pressurised when hot and opening it can cause a scalding coolant spray. Have the coolant recovery bottle cap off and the system fully cool and depressurised before disconnecting anything.

Tools and parts you'll need
- New degas hose (C1B1-8K276-BC recommended — see above)
- Coolant to Ford spec WSS-M97B44-D (Motorcraft orange OAT) for the top-up/refill
- Hose clip pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver, depending on clip type fitted
- Drain tray for the coolant released during the job
- Basic socket/spanner set for any brackets or covers in the way
Removal and fitting procedure
- Confirm the engine is fully cool, then remove the coolant recovery bottle cap to release any residual pressure.
- Identify the degas hose running between the coolant recovery bottle and the engine, close to the turbo/exhaust manifold area, and place a drain tray beneath it.
- Release the hose clips at each end of the old hose and carefully work it free, noting its routing so the new hose follows the same path away from hot components.
- Fit the new hose, routing it clear of the exhaust manifold and turbo in the same way as the original.
- Secure both hose clips, making sure they're seated on the hose's raised sealing bead, not just on plain hose.
- Top up the cooling system with the correct WSS-M97B44-D spec coolant, mixed to the correct concentration for UK winter protection.
- Run the engine with the cap loose (or per your car's bleed procedure) to help release any trapped air, then top up again once cool.
No reliable torque spec was found for the thermostat housing bolts if they're disturbed during this job — they aren't normally part of this specific repair, but if you do need to remove anything nearby, check your own workshop manual rather than guessing on a housing that seals under pressure.
Final checks and road test
Check the coolant level against the marked range on the recovery bottle once the engine has cooled fully after a run. Inspect both hose clip joints for weeping once the system's back up to temperature. On the first few drives, keep an eye on the temperature gauge and recheck the coolant level after a day or two — a properly bled system shouldn't need repeated topping up.
Troubleshooting and tips
- Level still dropping after the hose swap: check every other joint in the system too — a second, unrelated leak point isn't uncommon on an older car.
- Air in the system / erratic temperature gauge: repeat the bleed procedure; three-cylinder EcoBoost cooling systems can be fussy about trapped air.
- Sweet smell persists: check for coolant pooling anywhere in the engine bay, including under the intake, before assuming the new hose is at fault.
Once the revised all-rubber hose is fitted and the system's properly bled, the coolant level should hold steady with no more mystery topping-up. It's a cheap part and a manageable job, and fitting the later hose design means you won't be back here again for the same fault.
