It’s not often that a small hatchback becomes a national institution. But the Ford Fiesta didn’t just sell well — it dominated British roads for nearly five decades, becoming the best-selling car ever in the UK. Launched in 1976, the Fiesta was Ford’s answer to Britain’s growing appetite for compact, affordable, and economical motoring. Over seven generations and 47 years of production, more than 4.8 million Fiestas were sold in the UK alone — out of 22 million worldwide. In 2014, it officially overtook the Ford Escort (4,105,961 lifetime UK registrations) to become the all-time best-selling car in British history.
The numbers alone tell a compelling story, but it was what sat under the bonnet — and the price tag — that made it so irresistible to so many buyers.
The Fiesta evolved considerably across its seven generations. The Mk5 (2002–2008, chassis codes JH_/JD_) was particularly popular, available with engine codes including FXJA (1.4 16v, 80hp), FYJA (1.6 16v, 100hp), and FUJB (1.25 16v, 75hp). The hot hatch version of that era, the ST150, used the N4JB 2.0-litre engine pushing 150hp.
The final Mk7 generation (2017–2023) refined things further, with the everyday range powered by a 1.1-litre naturally aspirated unit (75hp) or the turbocharged 1.0-litre EcoBoost producing 100hp or 125hp in mild-hybrid (mHEV) form. The crowd-pleasing Fiesta ST topped the range with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost delivering 200hp — a genuine hot hatch at a hatchback price.
The body was predominantly steel construction with a galvanised underbody on later generations, and the Mk7’s EcoBoost engine featured a cast iron block with an aluminium alloy head — a combination that helped keep weight down while improving thermal efficiency.
The Fiesta hit a sweet spot that few cars manage — the right size for UK roads, affordable to buy and run, with plentiful and cheap parts thanks to the sheer volume on the road. It held the top spot in new car sales for 12 consecutive years from 2009 to 2020, a record unmatched by any other model in UK automotive history.
Ford officially ended Fiesta production in June 2023, citing shifting buyer preferences toward SUVs and crossovers, rising component costs, and the industry-wide push toward electrification. The Fiesta’s slot was effectively handed to an all-electric version of the Puma crossover.
But here’s the thing — Britain hasn’t moved on. According to SMMT data published in early 2025, a remarkable 306,207 used Fiestas changed hands in 2024 alone, making it the UK’s best-selling used car for the second year running after discontinuation. There are still over 1.5 million Fiestas on British roads today.
The Ford Fiesta may no longer roll off the production line, but its place in UK motoring history is permanently parked. Some icons simply don’t need to keep selling to stay relevant — and the Fiesta is living proof of that.
