Focus

If there’s one car that’s defined the British road for the better part of three decades, it’s the Ford Focus. From school runs in Sheffield to motorway miles across the country, the Focus has been a constant, reliable, and downright enjoyable companion — and there’s a very good reason it consistently ranked as one of the UK’s best-selling cars since 1998.

But what actually made it so special? Let’s take a proper look.

From Escort to Icon – The Birth of a Legend

The Focus didn’t arrive quietly. Launched in 1998 as the successor to the long-serving Ford Escort — a car with over 4.1 million UK sales across 33 years — it had enormous expectations to meet. It delivered and then some.

The Mk1 (1998–2004) brought Ford’s “New Edge” design philosophy to family hatchbacks — sharp lines, bold angles, and a look that genuinely turned heads. More than the styling though, it was the revolutionary Control Blade independent rear suspension that set the benchmark. Handling dynamics like this simply weren’t expected in a family hatchback, and drivers noticed immediately. In fact, the Mk1 nearly doubled UK sales of the Volkswagen Golf in its first generation, and took the European Car of the Year title in 1999.

Four Generations, One Consistent Promise

Each generation built on the last — here’s how the Focus evolved across its lifetime:

Generation Years Platform Key Engine Notable Feature
Mk1 1998–2004 C170 1.6L / 2.0L Duratec “New Edge” styling, Control Blade rear suspension
Mk2 2005–2011 C1 1.6L Duratec / 2.0L TDCi 25mm longer wheelbase, Bluetooth & KeyFree tech
Mk3 2011–2018 C1 evolved 1.0L EcoBoost (100/125PS) Global platform, Kinetic Design, EcoBoost debut
Mk4 2018–2025 C2 1.0L / 1.5L EcoBoost mHEV 88kg lighter, SYNC 3 infotainment, ADAS features

The Mk3’s introduction of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine (999cc displacement, 71.9mm bore, 82.0mm stroke, inline three-cylinder turbo with Ti-VCT) was a genuine game-changer. Ford’s official EcoBoost tech specs confirmed it in outputs of 100PS and 125PS — small in size but punchy in delivery, delivering real-world fuel economy that made it a favourite for UK commuters.

What Made It Work — Every Single Time

The Mk4, built on Ford’s all-new C2 platform (20% stiffer in torsional rigidity than its predecessor) shed up to 88kg compared to the Mk3, making it feel sharper and more refined. The Auto Express review rated the final Focus as having an “agile and involving chassis” with a “comfortable ride quality” — exactly the qualities that kept British buyers loyal for so long. Those wanting the hot hatch experience were well catered for too, with the Focus ST (2.0L EcoBoost, Ford part engine block code YGDA) and the legendary Focus RS — both offering performance well beyond their price tags.

For the used car market, the Focus became the UK’s number one most popular used car, a reflection of trust built over years of dependable ownership and strong resale value.

In November 2025, the last Ford Focus rolled off the production line at Ford’s Saarlouis plant — quietly bringing the curtain down on 27 years and over 12 million cars sold worldwide. Ford’s shift toward electric vehicles and the growing appetite for SUVs ultimately sealed the Focus’s fate, following the Fiesta into retirement.

But here’s the thing — the Focus didn’t fade. It finished. And that’s a very different thing. Choosemycar.com’s expert evaluation gave it a 4.3 out of 5 overall rating right up to the end, with performance and comfort both scoring above 4.0. That’s not a car running out of steam — that’s a car bowing out at the top.

The Ford Focus may no longer be in production, but on UK roads it remains one of the most visible and best-loved cars you’ll find. And if you’re looking at picking one up second-hand, you won’t be short of options — or fans who’ll tell you exactly why they wouldn’t drive anything else.
